I’ve applied for an apartment in Santa Monica and found out I’m not eligible unless I have renters insurance. Can a landlord demand renters insurance in California?


Landlords can require insurance from renters, but no law requires them to do so in California. In other words, it’s up to your landlord whether to require renter insurance from you. The good news is that renter’s insurance in California typically costs around $15-$20 per month, which is not prohibitively expensive for the protection of your belongings that you get.
