Does Home Insurance Cover Structural Damage?

January 8, 2024

I bought my first house about a year ago, and I’m still wondering whether my home insurance will cover structural damage.

Only structured damage caused by a covered peril will be covered. For example, a fire following an act of arson is usually covered, whereas earthquakes and floods require endorsements. Likewise, tree roots, settling, shrinking, and cracking foundations are all common exclusions that will unlikely be covered by your basic policy.

Last but not least, your state can significantly impact the type of coverage you need, so make sure to peruse your policy exclusions to see if you’re eligible for the right plan.
