What Happens to Home Insurance When Someone Passes Away?

September 27, 2023

My mom passed away recently, and I’m wondering what will happen to her policy.

We’re sorry for your loss.

When someone passes away, the homeowner’s insurance must be canceled. What you have to do in the first place is notify your mother’s insurance company that she passed away (a death certificate will likely be required).

If your mother had a mortgage and you’re planning on keeping the house, you’ll need to buy a new policy. Some insurance companies allow extending the coverage for the remainder of the policy period, while others give 30 days to get a new policy. You are responsible for the remaining payments if the policy isn’t paid in full.
